Vinegar Painted

The decoration on this piece imitates "vinegar" painting -- the overcoat of paint was mixed with vinegar to make a glaze and then modeled with a soft material such as putty. This technique is associated with chests and boxes from New England, especially Maine, in the early 1800's.
