Dome Top Chests were historically used as document boxes.

The Large Dome-Top Chest (approx. 5 x 5 ½ x 8 ½”) is decorated with motifs made with a compass. Many similar chests were attributed to an anonymous, probably Lancaster Co., PA craftsman known as the “Compass Artist.” (The original chest of this design was dated 1814, and is in the Winterthur Museum.)
